What are composite resin fillings?
Composite resin is today’s material of choice when a dental filling becomes necessary. Unlike metal amalgam fillings used in the past, composite is directly bonded to the tooth, providing additional strength and durability.
We customise composite fillings to match the shade of existing teeth and more naturally complete the appearance of smiles than the metal fillings used in the past. Composite fillings can be placed by removing less tooth structure than metal amalgam restorations, which protects the integrity of teeth.
We also refer to these as tooth-coloured fillings at our Darwin dental clinic.
What is dental bonding?
The same composite resin material that used for tooth-coloured fillings can also work for cosmetic dental bonding. It is ideal for repairing minor issues with the smile, and we can usually do the procedure in just one visit to our Darwin dental clinic. We can fix issues such as:
- Small gaps or spacing between teeth
- Roots exposed due to recession
- Size discrepancies
- Small chips and fractures
- Misshapen teeth
Bonding is a durable and cost-effective way to repair teeth as we can typically complete treatment in one appointment. It offers excellent longevity and can last for many years with the right home care and regular check-ups.
What is a dental crown?
If a tooth is cracked or decayed beyond the scope of a filling, we may recommend a dental crown in Darwin. We use tooth-coloured porcelain to make dental crowns that are durable and attractive.
A dental crown is designed to replace the entire outer layer of the tooth and restore function. Porcelain is strong and capable of providing many years of service and beauty.
Dental crowns can also be used to replace multiple teeth as part of a dental bridge.
Why do I need a crown and not just a filling?
A filling is ideal for restoring the damage left by tooth decay, which typically leaves a small hole, or cavity, in enamel. A filling, however, cannot correctly repair or support more extensive damage to teeth, such as cracks. When teeth sustain trauma or decay, or fractures beyond the scope of a filling, a dental crown can restore them more effectively.
Your Darwin dentist will also likely recommend a dental crown after root canal treatment. Removing the living tissue from the tooth root as is done in a root canal potentially leaves the tooth brittle and prone to fracture. A dental crown will strengthen the tooth and enable it to withstand the force of chewing.
What does a dental crown do?
A crown is designed to cover the remaining tooth structure completely. Most crowns are porcelain restorations intended to mimic a natural tooth. Crowns also protect the integrity of the root, such as biting, chewing, talking and smiling.
Dental crowns are also ideal for anchoring dental bridges and are often part of a smile makeover plan. Porcelain crowns are used to restore single dental implants and offer excellent longevity and durability with the right home care and regular check-ups.
At Casuarina Square Dental Care, we use the highest quality dental materials available for our patients’ restorations, providing function and aesthetics designed to last for many years. Call our Casuarina dental office today if you've got questions about our services.
How do I care for a dental crown in Darwin?
Dental crowns in Darwin are strong and durable, and you don’t need to do anything special to take care of your tooth cover. Dental crowns cannot develop decay the way your natural teeth can, but decay can take hold beneath the crown, so good oral hygiene that includes regular brushing and flossing is crucial. Be sure to visit your dentist every six months for check-ups and cleans to ensure your gums are healthy and to check the integrity of your restoration.
What are veneers?
If you have healthy teeth and gums, but you don’t like the way your smile looks, there are several different options available for you. Veneers might be the answer if you have damage, discolouration, misalignment or other issues with your teeth. Unlike professional teeth whitening, which can only make your smile brighter, veneers at our Darwin dental clinic can dramatically change the way your smile looks. Veneers are a way to cover up flaws with your smile—and the entire process takes only a couple of visits to the dental clinic.
Veneers can cover up bleach-resistant stains, chips, cracks and gaps in your smile. If your teeth are misaligned, but you do not want to undergo orthodontic treatment, veneers can give you a straighter smile.
These ultra-thin tooth covers are attached to the fronts of the teeth that show when you smile. Because some of the tooth surface needs to be removed to make room for the veneers, these are a permanent cosmetic dentistry treatment.
Many of the celebrity smiles you may admire are likely the result of dental veneers.
Am I a good candidate for veneers?
If your teeth and gums are healthy, you might be a good candidate for veneers. Veneers are a cosmetic dentistry treatment often suitable for camouflaging the following dental issues:
- Teeth that are stained and resistant to teeth bleaching
- Teeth that have small gaps
- Teeth that need lengthening
- Teeth that have small cracks or chips
- Teeth that are misaligned
Veneers are easy to care for—and no different than caring for your natural teeth. Use common sense and avoid biting into anything that is not food or using your teeth as a tool. Simply brush and floss as you always have, and stay current with visits to your Darwin dentist for check-ups and cleans.
