We make every effort to treat our emergency patients the same day at Casuarina Square Dental Care, and each of our dentists leaves time during the day in case our patients need us.

Common Dental Emergencies

Here are some common dental emergencies we treat at our practice:

  • Broken or lost dental restorations – This may not need immediate attention, but we recommend patients contact our practice to discuss their options.
  • Knocked-out teeth – Time is of the essence. We recommend patients contact us as soon as possible after the injury or accident so we have a better chance of saving the tooth.
  • Dental pain – Sensitivity or a constant toothache may indicate an infection. An infection will not typically go away without treatment. We welcome you to contact our practice right away to achieve faster relief.
  • Broken or chipped teeth – If a tooth breaks, it may or may not be painful, but it should be evaluated to determine the options to protect it.

Sometimes it is hard to determine if an emergency situation requires immediate attention. If you are unsure whether a condition is an actual dental emergency, our team can help you determine how to proceed. We are always happy to offer guidance and answer your questions.

If your tooth is injured, decayed, or infected and causing constant pain, it may require root canal therapy. When you contact us, we will provide pain relief and treatment as quickly as possible.

One of our gentle dentists will remove the infected tissue through a small access point. At Casuarina Square Dental Care, we use rotary endodontic instruments rather than manual instruments. This makes the procedure more comfortable and efficient for most patients.

As soon as the infection is completely removed, we will seal the tooth with a temporary filling and give it time to heal. We will strengthen the tooth with a permanent dental filling or crown to protect it.

Will My Root Canal Treatment Hurt?

Root canal therapy has received a bad reputation in the past because it is typically associated with pain; however, it is actually the infection that causes discomfort rather than the treatment.

We use numbing techniques to ensure that our patients do not feel pain during the procedure, and rotary endodontics help us complete the root canal procedure in a more timely and effective manner. Not to mention our highly skilled team is gentle and caring, always keeping patient comfort in mind.

If you or a family member is experiencing a dental emergency, we welcome you to call Casuarina Square Dental Care as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental emergencies can strike unexpectedly. Knowing when to seek immediate care is crucial for preventing further damage and preserving oral health. There are certain telltale signs – severe tooth pain, facial swelling, or sudden injuries to the mouth, it's time to seek emergency dental care.

  • Severe tooth pain. Persistent and severe tooth pain that is unresponsive to at-home pain relief solutions can indicate issues like an abscessed tooth, gum disease, or advanced decay. If over-the-counter pain relievers provide no relief, seek professional attention at once.
  • Facial swelling. Swelling in the face, especially when accompanied by warmth or redness, maybe a sign of infection. Dental infections can spread rapidly, making timely intervention essential to prevent complications that require root canal therapy or extraction.
  • Sudden injury. Accidents happen, and dental injuries require prompt attention. Whether it's a knocked-out tooth, a fractured jaw, or other trauma, immediate care increases the chances of successful treatment.

Knowing what to do in a dental emergency can be the key to a speedy and full recovery. Here are some simple steps that you can take if faced with various dental emergencies:

  • Severe toothache. In the event of sudden, persistent, and intense pain, if ice, salt water rinses, and over-the-counter medication are all ineffective, contact your dentist for immediate emergency care.
  • Swelling of the gums or the jawbone. Swelling of the gums or jawbone is often a sign of infection that can cause tooth loss and even spread to other parts of the body. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater, apply a cold compress, and contact your dentist immediately.
  • Unexplained bleeding from the gums. Unexplained bleeding of the gums is often a sign of an infection or dental abscess that can result in tooth loss if neglected. Gently rinse with cold water, apply pressure with a clean cloth to control the bleeding, and contact your dentist as soon as possible.
  • Adult tooth loss. Whether due to trauma or decay, the loss of a permanent tooth is an emergency. Fortunately, a few simple steps can help to save the tooth. In these cases:
    • Pick up the tooth without touching the root
    • Rinse without scrubbing
    • If possible, put it back in its socket in the jawbone; otherwise, put it in a container of water or milk
    • Get to a dentist as soon as possible

When you run into a dental emergency, it's crucial to seek professional help as quickly as possible.

What Is Emergency Dental Care?

Emergency dental care is focused on the goals of relieving pain, preventing further damage, and stabilising the damaged area until more comprehensive care is possible.

Emergency dental services often include pain management and may also involve temporary repairs or, if necessary, immediate extractions. Many emergency dental clinics operate beyond regular office hours to ensure accessibility during unexpected situations. If you experience a dental emergency, contact your dental provider promptly to receive the necessary care and guidance.

As always, all surgical or invasive procedures carry risks. Before proceeding, seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Dental emergencies not only strike unexpectedly, causing physical discomfort and anxiety, but do so in a variety of ways. Knowing how to identify dental emergencies (and what to do when they arise) makes all the difference in the world.

Here are a few of the dental issues that a person is most likely to encounter and how to identify whether they rise to the level of an emergency and require immediate care:

  • Sudden, persistent and severe toothache that is unresponsive to at-home remedies like icepacks, rinses with salt water and over-the-counter pain medication.
  • Broken, loose or knocked-out adult teeth due to trauma, accidents, untreated decay or biting on hard objects.
  • Red, tender and visibly swollen gums, usually caused by infection or gum disease.
  • Swelling of the jawbone is also a sign of infection, abscess or serious injury.

Most dental emergencies will not fully resolve on their own and require attention from your dentist.
