What are some common dental emergencies?

Dental emergencies not only strike unexpectedly, causing physical discomfort and anxiety, but do so in a variety of ways. Knowing how to identify dental emergencies (and what to do when they arise) makes all the difference in the world.

Here are a few of the dental issues that a person is most likely to encounter and how to identify whether they rise to the level of an emergency and require immediate care:

  • Sudden, persistent and severe toothache that is unresponsive to at-home remedies like icepacks, rinses with salt water and over-the-counter pain medication.
  • Broken, loose or knocked-out adult teeth due to trauma, accidents, untreated decay or biting on hard objects.
  • Red, tender and visibly swollen gums, usually caused by infection or gum disease.
  • Swelling of the jawbone is also a sign of infection, abscess or serious injury.

Most dental emergencies will not fully resolve on their own and require attention from your dentist.
