How does continuous open airway therapy treat sleep apnoea?

Continuous Open Airway Therapy, or COAT, is a method of treating obstructive sleep apnoea using a custom-fitted oral appliance worn during sleep. Rather than using pressurised air to keep the airway open, COAT works by gently moving the lower jaw and tongue forward. This position helps prevent the soft tissue at the back of the throat from falling and blocking the airway while you sleep.

What Does the Appliance Look Like?

A custom-made COAT appliance fits over your upper and lower teeth, similar to a mouthguard. It is designed to hold your jaw in a slightly forward position throughout the night. Because we design the device to fit your mouth, it is typically more comfortable than a one-size option.

Is COAT Suitable for Everyone?

COAT may be suitable for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, or for patients who have difficulty with other forms of treatment. It is not effective for all cases, and your dentist will assess your condition before recommending it.
