Safety is your dentist’s primary concern in any procedure you undergo while in their care. While the X-ray exposure during the CBCT scan is higher than traditional X-ray examinations, your dentist will only advise and carry out this scan if it is deemed appropriate for your specific dental needs. A “medical” CT scan would have considerably higher exposure to X-rays making the CBCT scan a safer alternative.

A CBCT scan is a relatively quick procedure, lasting only a few minutes. Your Darwin dentist will suggest you allocate at least twenty minutes for set up, scan and viewing the images. To prepare for your scan you will need to remove any facial jewelry, piercings, or dentures. It is recommended this is done prior to your appointment to save time during the procedure.
During the scan you will be carefully positioned by the operator and will need to remain still throughout the procedure. The CBCT will move in a circular motion while completing the scan, but will not come into contact with you.

We typically recommend that standard small x-rays be taken every two years to help our dentists see any internal issues that may not otherwise be detected. They are also easy to transfer to any other pertinent providers.
The Difference With Digital X-Rays
Digital x-rays are much safer for our patients, and they are also less harmful to our environment. They emit up to 80 percent less radiation than traditional x-rays. In fact, you are more likely to get more radiation from a walk outside in the Australian sunshine. With digital x-rays, there are no harsh chemicals required for development, reducing waste impact, so they are better for the environment as well.
